Every year approximately 40,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer – often after it has already reached an advanced stage. Diagnosed early, oral cancer is often treatable, and patients usually have a positive outlook. A VELscope screening takes only a matter of minutes and can identify potential problem areas that the naked eye cannot see. The VELscope emits a high-energy blue light that causes the tissues in your mouth to fluoresce (an action similar to glowing.) Then, the dental team views these tissues through special optical filters. Any irregular tissues emit different, usually darker fluorescence patterns, which alert the dental team that a closer look is necessary.
